Feel the natural GLUTEN-FREE waxing experience

May is National Celiac Disease Awareness Month and according to the National Foundation for Celiac Awareness, “Celiac disease affects 3 million Americans, yet 95% of sufferers don’t know they have it.”  It is considered to be the most under-diagnosed common disease today, potentially affecting 1 in every 133 people in the USA. It is a chronic, inherited disease, and if untreated can ultimately lead to malnutrition.

Celiac Disease, sometimes referred to as Gluten intolerance is the result of an immune-mediated response to the ingestion of gluten (from wheat, rye, barley, etc.) that damages the small intestine. Nutrients are then quickly passed through the small intestine, rather than being absorbed. The disease is permanent and damage to the small intestine will occur every time you consume gluten, regardless if symptoms are present.  Celiac disease cannot be cured. Strict adherence to a gluten-free diet for life is the only treatment currently available. This involves the elimination of wheat, rye, barley, and derivatives of these grains from your diet.

Experts, including those at the Mayo Clinic, consistently state that the gluten molecule is too large to pass through skin, therefore,  lotions, shampoos, conditioners, and other external products shouldn’t be a problem unless you have open sores, rashes, or dermatitis herpetiformis.  However, in spite of the scientific evidence suggesting external products shouldn’t pose a problem, there are numerous people that report reactions to products they touch or apply that contain gluten. Whether the problem is indeed some form of skin sensitivity to gluten or it is accidental ingestion it is safer for those that have gluten intolerance to stay away from gluten.  The simplest advice: If a product bothers you, don’t use it.

That’s the story of the founder of Uni K Wax Centers, Noemi Grupenmager.  Noemi was unable to have any waxing done.  Nor could she apply any creams to have her hair removed.  Every time she did so, she had some kind of skin reaction.  She began to experiment with different formulas for waxes and looked to create a very natural wax.  Once she was able to get the right formula, she was finally able to get waxed without having any of the terrible side effects.  It wasn’t until later, after several years, that she was diagnosed as an adult with Celiac Disease.  After the diagnosis, she went back and examined the formula for her wax.  It was then that she noticed that her wax formula was free of gluten!  “If you suffer from that disease you don’t want to take any chances. I want to bring to the market a gluten free wax to give a healthier option to all those men and women who know or even don’t know they are gluten-intolerant” says Noemi Grupenmager, founder and CEO of Uni K Wax.

As anyone who suffers from Celiac Disease or gluten intolerance can attest to, building a regimen based entirely of gluten-free products can be challenging. There’s good news, though: more and more gluten-free products are becoming available every year, ranging from food and toothpaste to cosmetics and soaps. Every day, more major restaurant chains are marketing gluten-free menus. This makes life just a bit easier, particularly for those who want some variety from their products. Gluten-free skincare is one such category that has witnessed impressive growth over the past few years. These products, while formulated especially for individuals who suffer from gluten intolerance, are also relied on by anyone with sensitive, dry or otherwise troubled skin.

Uni K Wax, the first waxing only center in the US, with over 20 locations in Florida and New York is proud to support a gluten-free lifestyle. As people with Celiac Disease understand all too well, cross contamination is one of the hardest things to control.  The Uni K Wax 100% natural gluten-free wax is a combination of the resin of a unique aromatic pine tree that enjoys properties that no other pine tree enjoys and beeswax.  Its consistency and elasticity, applied at body temperature is ideal for the most sensitive skin and not only removes hair from the root for long-lasting hair removal, but it also exfoliates and softens leaving skin as smooth as silk.  Feel the natural gluten free waxing experience at any one of the Uni K Wax Centers.
